Around 100 entrepreneurs and scientists came together at the futureSAX Innovation Forum 2018 at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences to discuss this year's topic "Key technology in lightweight construction - cross-industry applications for sustainable innovations". The participants got to know lightweight construction as an important cross-sectional technology and innovation driver for other industries.

Knowledge and technology transfer

Dr. Hartmut Mangold, Saxon State Secretary for Economics and Transport, said in his opening speech: "Innovation is increasingly emerging at the intersections of different industries and technologies, our current topic of lightweight construction, is such a key and cross-sectional technology. In this central research field for Saxony, products are being researched at the highest level at different locations in cooperation with regional partners from industry."

A core task here is the transfer of knowledge and technology. This is exactly where the futureSAX Innovation Forum came in: the event offered the ideal framework for the exchange between science and business as well as for cross-sector and interdisciplinary networking.

The welcome was followed by a short but impressive lecture by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ulrich Prahl on the significance and development of the key technology of lightweight construction in Saxony, in which the member of the Leichtbau-Allianz Sachsen e.V. emphasised Saxony's outstanding position in the key technology: "Almost one third of the nationwide science in lightweight construction is located in Saxony. That makes me honestly proud of the Free State of Saxony."

Afterwards, the four moderators of the theme workshops, Prof. Maik Gude, Dr. Thomas Heber, Prof. Lothar Kroll and Prof. Sebastian Scholz, were given the floor one after the other to present and introduce their panel in exciting impulse lectures.

Impulse lectures & discussions in the panels

In the following small rounds of talks, the experts and interested parties discussed the areas of mobility, construction, production and materials. The following coffee break was used by the participants to exchange the results of the first round, to network, but also to inform themselves about the start of the futureSAX competition year 2019. The Saxon Innovation Prize, the Saxon Transfer Prize and the Saxon Founder Prize are looking forward to many applications from innovators from the Free State of Saxony.

In the second round, too, the guests discussed topics relating to cross-sectional disciplines in a lively and wide-ranging manner, discussing possibilities and potential. The diversity of this technology then became particularly clear in the presentation of the results. Standardisation, standardisation, greening out and digitisation in lightweight construction, which could also lead to a livelier economic participation of SMEs from the region, but which is still a major homework, were points that were more or less discussed in all the panels. The cut quantities and possibilities of lightweight construction and construction were discussed as well as longevity and possible savings of valuable resources. The panel participants also showed great interest in recycling as part of the entire value chain.

Saxony is rightly the leading location in lightweight construction.

Marina Heimann, Managing Director of futureSAX GmbH, emphasized in her closing remarks: "Today has shown that we are rightly a leading location in lightweight construction. Such committed companies and research institutes and exciting start-ups that today exchanged ideas, looked for new approaches and looked to the future together. If we seize the opportunities that have arisen today and network the various players even better, we will be able to exploit the potential even better and further consolidate our position in the Free State of Bavaria.

The event was rounded off by a joint get-together. A good meal was an excellent opportunity to make new contacts and find cooperation partners from other areas. What synergies and projects will emerge from the discussions? You can be curious!
